Monday-Day One
Recruits started off the day with a tour of the station and how the department works. The highlight of the tour was the
communication center and jail cells. The MBTA Transit Police Bomb Squad then demonstrated their dogs and equipment. Lunch
was pizza from North End Pizza.
The afternoon session consisted of a SWAT demonstration by Officer Popovski and a police equipment demonstration by
Wellesley Police Officers. Recruits then went "hands on" with the gear and uniforms.
Tuesday-Day Two
Recruits spent the morning with the Massachusetts State Police Marine Unit at Boston Harbor. After a brief tour of the barracks,
the two Wellesley Squads boarded Marine 41 and Marine 42 for an in depth tour of Boston Harbor. The State Police also
showed what the boats can do with some high speed maneuvering outside of Castle Island. The Marine Unit still remains a very
popular trip with the recruits (and Sgt. Renzella!)
After returning to Wellesley, the recruits went to Morses Pond for a cookout on the beach. The weather was outstanding, and
Officer Spencer did a fine job on the grill.
Wednesday-Day Three
Day 3 was all about the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Cadets spent the day with Detectives Stanley J. Dunajski and Robert
Gallagher. The morning session started off with an in depth lecture from the detectives on the type of job they do, and the
equipment they use. Practical demonstrations included the lifting of foot prints and the use of alternative light sources to locate
evidence at crime scenes. Cadets also learned about witness identifications and tried to identify a thief from a video.
The cadets then got their chance to dust evidence for fingerprints, using the same tools that detectives use. They also learned
how to make foot wear impressions and to preserve those impressions using plaster casts. The cadets learned how to take
fingerprints of suspects, and then fingerprinted themselves. The afternoon session consisted of a practical crime scene exercise.

Day 4 was spent at the Charlestown Navy Yard as our base of operations. The cadets began the day on the Duck Bus, and a tour
of historic Boston on land. Then it was back to Charlestown, where the the bus launched itself into the Mystic River. The cadets
seemed to enjoy the huge splash as we went in off the pier. We then cruised Boston Harbor and some of the cadets got a chance
to actually drive the bus/boat on the water.
Halfway through the harbor tour, the rain started without warning, but fortunately the duck boat/bus was equipped with ponchos.
As each cadet left the bus/boat, they were given plastic duck noise makers. These nifty little devices make a loud duck type sound.
Good luck to the parents when these items get home, because they are funny for about thirty seconds, especially when you are
trying to talk.
After lunch in the Navy Yard, cadets got a guided tour of the USS Constitution and learned several nautical terms, as well as the
history of the oldest commissioned ship AFLOAT. After the tour it was a quick trip back to Wellesley for the end of the day.
Thursday-Day Four
Friday-Day Five
Day 5 was based out of the Wellesley Police Department. Cadets learned about LIDAR and RADAR from Officer Cunningham,
and then got to use their new skills on Washington Street. Officer Carrasquillo taught accident reconstruction, and Sue Webb
showed her Bloodhound named Mazi.
The rest of the day was spent conducting motor vehicle stops and using the radio in the cruiser.
At 2:15 the parents of the cadets attended a graduation ceremony. A slide show of the week's activities was shown. Each cadet
then received their graduation certificate, a Wellesley Police model cruiser, a patch, and a copy of the slide show.
At 3:00 PM the 6th annual Wellesley Police Youth Academy was finished!
